WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The cost of a popular arthritis drug has plunged after a study published by an international panel of scientists said the drug may be worth more than $500 million.
The panel, which recommended the drug's use as an aid to managing pain, said it found that Celebrex, the brand name for a medicine used to treat arthritis, was worth more in the first year it was approved. The drug's maker, Pfizer, said in a statement the panel had decided it was "not appropriate and that the safety and effectiveness of Celebrex have not been proven".
The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, examined a sample of more than 1,100 patients in two randomized clinical trials comparing celecoxib to placebo.
"In this study, the number of patients who were in the celecoxib group was significantly lower than the placebo group," Dr. Steven Nissen, the lead author of the study, said in a statement. "This study highlights the importance of this drug in managing pain."
Celebrex, or celecoxib, is a prescription medication used to treat arthritis, a condition in which pain is caused by an imbalance of hormones that causes inflammation of the joints, the lining of the spine, and the bones of the hips and knees.
